But Give Yourself Some Grace!

Congratulations, momma! You’ve made it to the last lesson in the Starting Your Own Preschool Co-op Series!

If you missed some of the other lessons, you can jump back to the beginning HERE.

But if you have made it this far, you’re ready to start! You’ve put in a ton of work and now it’s time for all of your efforts to pay off.

The last lesson is really pretty simple – just start! You’ve laid the groundwork and now it’s time to test out the waters. So, pull out that schedule, take a look at your start date, and get ready to enjoy the ride!

I’ve included this as a separate lesson because I think it’s something we need to remind ourselves. We can spend hours pouring over the details, making sure the schedule is absolutely perfect, and meticulously attempting to plan every moment of our lesson. But the truth is, it will never be perfect. And the longer we stress about all of the details, the less time we spend actually enjoying the group and the purpose behind it.

So, go for it! Get your group rolling and soak up these precious moments with your kiddos.

However, I cannot tell you enough – you must show yourself GRACE! There will be days when lessons totally flop, your kids have an absolute melt-down in the middle of your lesson, your group spills their snack ALL OVER your floor, and your lessons plans that were supposed to last until 11am are completely finished by 10:30am. How do I know? They have happened to me – every single one of them – but I still would not change this preschool experience for the world.

So, this lesson is a simple one – get going, show yourself (and your kiddos) some grace, and I’m sure that in no time, you will be overflowing with gratitude for this experience.

I sincerely hope this series has been a blessing to you and has given you the courage to start your own preschool co-op. And seriously, I would LOVE to hear about it. So, please leave a comment below and let me know when your group will be starting. Tell me how many kids you have in your group and what you are most nervous about. I’d love to help you out and send you some encouragement along the way!
And if this post or series has been helpful for you, I'd love for you to share it with your friends. Just click one of the icons on the left to share.

Enjoy the journey!

Look at you go, girl! You've completed lessons 1-5, and now it's time for a shopping spree!! And while I wish I could tell you that you get to go spend money on a new outfit for yourself, it's actually time to shop for all of the supplies you will need for your preschool group. Don't worry - it's just as fun (well, almost)!

By the way, if you missed some of the other lessons, you can jump back to the beginning HERE.

But back to shopping.......I highly recommend purchasing supplies as a group. That way, you always have your essentials taken care of - and you each aren't purchasing a class supply of glue sticks and crayons for when it's your turn to teach. So, let's get ready to hit those Back to School sales!

First, you will need to decide as a group what supplies you will need. Make a list - because you definitely won't remember once you start looking down the aisles of all that Back to School goodness!

You will also need to decide whether you want to have a group supply bin or if each student will have their own smaller bin for their own supplies. However, I highly recommend a common supply bin. With preschoolers, something is always getting lost or broken, and it's just so much easier to have a bin of supplies to pull from than to try to manage the group and comfort Jenny who cannot find her blue crayon. Of course, it's up to you, but that's just what we decided to go with.

To get you started, here's a list of items we always stock up on:

1 large clear bin (I like the ones with a locking lid). This is for you to store all of the supplies week to week.

Crayons

Scissors

Construction Paper

Glue sticks

White glue -you really need this is you plan on doing any crafts that include materials other than paper

Markers

Dot Markers

Highlighters - I love these for tracing!

Paints & brushes

Watercolors

Stickers

Baby wipes

Zip-top plastic bags - great for sorting materials ahead of time!

Any cleaning supplies you think you'll need

Hand sanitizer

Remember, you don't need to get all of the items listed above. And maybe there's something you'd love to have in your supply box that I don't have listed. Go for it! You need to do what works for you!

Once you've got your list, you'll need to decide upon how the items will be purchased. You could have each mom pick an item or two and purchase that item for the entire class. Or, you could assign 1-2 people the job of purchasing all of the supplies. Then, just take the total and divide it by the number of people in the group. We always add a little "fluff" to the total and set that aside so that it when it comes time to replace the glue sticks - which always seem to run out around March - we already have money set aside for that purchase. So, if you spent $70 on supplies, I'd add about $10 for extra supply expenses during the year, making it $80. Then, if you've got 8 kiddos in the group, it would be $10 per child - and your supplies for the year are covered.

Of course, this covers all of your basic supplies. If you are planning an art project and you really want those cute googly eyes, you'll need to go out and purchase that for the week. But let me tell you, having this bin of supplies has been such a blessing! It has saved me numerous trips to the store and quite a bit of money. The other great thing about putting everything in a bin is that it makes it super easy to rotate. After each preschool group, whoever is next on the schedule to teach can just take the bin with them and have the whole week to prepare and prep supplies. It was ah-mazing!!

So, time to get shopping! Leave a comment below and tell me about you best back to school score! You know there are some amazing deals out there! What are you back to school essentials for your preschool co-op? I'd love to hear.

Then, check back with me next week and we hit the final lesson! See you soon!
We are so close to getting this preschool co-op up and running! Can you feel the excitement?

Next up.....creating your schedule! While you will want everyone's input on what components will go on the schedule, most likely, this job will be assigned to 1-2 people. Yes, all you administrative, organization-oriented people, I am talking to you! This is your forte! So, jump on this opportunity!

First up, you will need to decide as a group what you want to have on your schedule. This will depend on the individual needs of your group, but some ideas that you might include are:

Who is teaching each week?

Do you want to have an assigned helper?

Who is responsible for snack?

What is being taught?

Do you want to incorporate some time at the beginning of the year to practice rules and routines?

Is someone assigned clean-up duty?

If you have little ones, who will be with them?

Are there any field trips we want to include on the schedule?

Are there any memory skills or Bible verses you want to assign for each month?

If there are more moms than assigned positions, where do we want them to go? Roving and helping as needed? Or free to leave? (GASP!!! - possible time without kids???)

Once you've decided upon what info you want on your schedule, it's time for the 1-2 people who have so graciously offered to put it all together to get started - and the rest of you can kindly pick them up their favorite Starbucks or treat - because it is a task!

I begin the schedule-making process by making a table, with all of my assigned positions at the top. You can do this in Word, PowerPoint, or any other word processing program. Here's a snapshot of our schedule from last fall:

As you can see, we had a verse assigned for each month, which is noted at the top. Then, we had all of our meeting dates on the left. Along the top of the table I have the jobs/components that we agreed to include.

Our group had 9 preschoolers and 6 little guys, so we had an assigned preschool teacher with a helper (that's the box right next to the date). The first person listed was the teacher, and the second was the helper, who was also in charge of snack. Then, since we had 6 little guys (although some littles stayed with momma), 2 moms were assigned there.

We also had an assigned rover each week who basically filled in wherever was needed. If the preschoolers needed extra help, she'd go there. If babies were struggling, she'd go there. And if the teacher's baby was absolutely melting, the rover sometimes even took him on a little walk in the stroller.

And yes, we even had the option of leaving a few times each semester - perfect time for Target runs! In our group, we agreed that mommas that were leaving would take their little one(s), and of course, if someone was sick, or needed extra help they'd stay. But when it worked, it was great!

We also included our curriculum on the schedule. As I mentioned in lesson 3, we started with a letter of the week and two additional skills, which are noted on the schedule. We had a list of about 8 skills that we simply rotated throughout the year.

So once the formatting is done, you just start plugging in the names of the mommas in your group. Easier said than done, right? It's okay, you can do this! I start my scheduling by assigning the teachers first. That way, I know that everyone has a chance to teach.

Then, I go back and tackle one week at a time - assigning moms to the different jobs and trying to make sure everyone gets the opportunity to fill the various roles. One trick that has helped me is that wonderful "Find" button, found in the toolbar at the top, I click "Find," and enter each mom's name one at a time. Then, the program will highlight each time that name appears in the document. This has been a huge help in 1) making sure everyone is on the schedule each week (once, not twice) and 2) ensuring that each mom is getting to serve in a variety of ways - and they are each getting a week "off".

Once you've got it made - pat yourself on the back! It's a tough job! You've done the grunt work - now just send it out to your group (either via email or Google Docs) and have them double check everything. Don't be discouraged if you have to make a few adjustments - it inevitably happens, but you are well on your way to getting this preschool ball rolling!

I know this can be a challenging task, but I'd love to help you! Leave a comment below and tell me how your schedule-making is going. Where do you need help? Do you have your roles assigned? Are you running into any challenges that I could help you with? Just comment below and I'll get back to you!

Okay, you've done a lot of work. You've found your group, defined your structure, and chosen your curriculum. Now, it's time to agree upon your norms for the group.

I know what you're thinking? Norms? Really? Seems a little much for a preschool co-op. I know - I thought the same thing.

But then.......

Our group got together to talk about what we expected as a group and it was sooooo helpful! I was so thankful that we had agreed upon these before the group got started.

Figuring out your norms probably won't take a ton of time, so if you want to combine it with Lesson 3, go for it! On the other hand, if you're just looking for a little time to get away and bond with your new buddies, plan it separately and enjoy the extra time to visit!

So, what exactly are norms? Well, the dictionary defines norms as "standards of proper or acceptable behavior" My own Ashley-version of it for preschool purposes is "how we expect the group to run and the people to behave while we are working as a group."

Basically, you just want everyone to be on the same page as far as group expectations. Some of the things you may want to discuss include:

What is our "sick policy"? Can kids still come if they have a runny nose? Fevers?

What time are we expected to arrive?

When will the lessons begin?

Will there be a playtime after the structured time ends? Or are we expected to leave right away?

By what time should everyone be gone? This is different than the end time for preschool. This is the time everyone should be out of the house or facility.

What is the plan for other siblings?

Are all moms in the same room as the kids? Or is it just the teacher and a helper?

If moms are in the room, what is the expectation for them? Helping with activities or just helping kids to stay focused?

Will we be having a snack? Who provides it?

Are there any allergies we need to be aware of?

How will we handle birthdays?

What is our "behavior policy"? Who addresses misbehavior - the teacher or the parent?

Are you open to inviting other families or have you reached your "max"?

What is the preferred method of communication?

These are just a few suggestions. And yes, for some of them, you may already be on the same page (like not coming when your kiddo is running a fever), but formally agreeing upon it and putting it into writing solidifies it!

Once you've agreed upon your norms, you'll be ready to begin working on your schedule, which we will look at next week. Are you excited? We are almost there!

Okay, your turn! Leave a comment below letting me know how you're doing. Are your norms in place? Were there any that you added that I didn't list above?

And if this post or series has been helpful for you, I'd love for you to share it with your friends. Just click on one of the icons to the left to share.

And next week, be sure to have your pencils ready - we'll begin to tackle making the schedule. See ya soon!

One Step Closer Teachinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11629026609690768058noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6608535214917510928.post-31201448839534099352016-07-07T20:02:00.000-07:002016-07-13T20:29:49.130-07:00Choose Your Curriculum

So, you've found your tribe, you've defined your structure, and now it's time to have some fun! It's time to choose your curriculum!

I know what you're thinking, curriculum? That sounds way too formal for me! But don't freak out - it's really just deciding what you are going to teach. And in most cases, simple is better. You've got this momma, let's just take it one step at a time.

While I was getting my degree and teaching credential, one of the concepts that constantly resurfaced was the idea of backwards mapping. Basically, it's just thinking about what goals you'd like your kiddos to achieve by the end of the year, and planning backwards from there.

Now, depending on the ages of the kiddos in your group, the skills and concepts you may want them to learn will vary. For example, your goals for a group of 2 and half or 3 years olds, will probably be different that your goals for a group of 4 year olds - which is actually perfect if you're planning on continuing your co-op for more than one year.

So, this is where you get to chat and decide, what do I really want them to learn at this point? Here are a few ideas to get you thinking:

Suggested Activities for 2 years old and older

Learning the Letters of the Alphabet

Counting 1-10

Basic Shapes

Colors

Gross Motor Activities (exercise type activities are great for this)

Animal Names and Sounds

Bible Stories and Activities

Memorization Skills/Bible verses

Read Alouds

Suggested Activities for 3 years old and older

Remember, these are only suggestions! Don't worry if you're starting this with a 4 year old - you are not behind. Just start with what they know, and move on from there. You need to do what it appropriate for your child, but this is to give you an idea of what you could cover. As a side note, if you're struggling with exactly where to start, don't hesitate to send me an email. I'd love to help you out.

Now, don't be overwhelmed with this list. You DO NOT need to do it all - and you definitely don't need to do it all every week. In fact, that would be quite impossible! Just think about what you want them to learn and we'll get into the nitty gritty stuff when we make the schedule (which is coming in Lesson 5).

But to give you an idea of how this might look, I'll share what we have done in the past. For simplicity sake, we started with the alphabet.

Each week was assigned a different letter as our focus. The teacher could be as creative as she wanted with teaching the letter, but the letter was assigned.

Then, each week we assigned two additional skills - science, numbers, sorting, cutting and gluing, etc. The teacher could do activities that tied in the with letter or just a great activity to teach the skills. Again - total creative license,

Each month we practiced and memorized a Bible verse, and at the end of the month, the kids would each get up and say the verse - usually with some help - and always for a little treat!

That's it - a letter, two skills, practice the verse, and snack. See, I told you you've got this!

We actually repeated this cycle for two years - focusing just on letter recognition when they were little and moving on as they grew. Don't get me wrong, when they were little, we taught the letter Bb and that Bb says "buh," but our focus was on teaching them to recognize the various letters. Then, as they grew we worked more on connecting the letters with their sounds and even some beginning blending.

However, you could also go a totally different route and have a different theme every month - farm, ocean, construction, etc, and incorporate various activities related to the theme over the course of the month.

Again, this is where you get to decide. Choose what is going to work best for your kiddos - without causing you to want to rip your hair out! Remember, you want to enjoy this process too.

So, there you go! Get together with the other moms, and dig in. What do we want them to learn and how do we want to structure it? I guarantee, once you start jotting ideas down, it will be so much easier than it seems!

So, now it's your turn. Leave a comment below and tell me where you are in the process. Do you need help deciding exactly what to teach? Are you using an overarching letter theme, are you going to plan thematically, or do you have another idea? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

And if this post or this series has been helpful for you, I'd love for you to share it with your friends - either via Facebook, email, or even word of mouth.

<span style="font-family: "hellobasic"; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 150%;">

Okay momma,
so now that you’ve found your tribe, it’s time to start planning!

Now, this is
the fun part. You’re going to need some time to chat with the other mommas – sans kiddos. So figure out a
time that works for everyone, order a pizza (so you don’t come home to a pile
of dinner clean-up), have your hubby watch the kids (or hire a babysitter), and
go out! Enjoy this time – you need it!

Grab coffee,
frozen yogurt, or even have dinner together. We always go to our local favorite
– a tea bar
with the best salads, wraps, and beverages ever! In fact, I am sipping on one
of their amazing Pomegranate Lemonades now – (oh yeah, I even Instagramed it – that’s how good it is!)

But I’m
getting off track…..the point is – you’ll need some time to talk without the constant interruption of
your littles. So, GO OUT!

Once you’re
all rounded up, introduce yourselves! What’s your name? How many kiddos and how
old? Something fun? There may be people who don’t know each other – so remember to smile! This can
be totally intimidating for some people, and the last thing you want to do is
make them feel out of place.

Then, you
actually have to get down to business. I know, you’re a mom, you never get out
alone – with your friends – but we do have to make progress.

First on the
agenda is formally defining the structure of your group. How many days a week
do you want to meet? For how long? Which day(s)? Where will you meet?

I know this
isn’t exactly the fun stuff, but you have to cover it first because the actual
logistics will determine who can and wants to commit to the group. For some,
meeting every week would just be too much. For others, Wednesdays just won’t
work because of dance class. It’s important to get these details figured out
before you jump into the meat of the preschool.

Once you’ve
got the structure in place, you get to dive into the fun stuff – what you’re going to teach! We’ll
talk about that more in Lesson 3.

As a side
note, you’ll definitely need to have another mom’s night to plan the teaching.
So, if getting out again in the near future seems overwhelming, you can plan on covering this lesson and lesson 3 in one meeting - but avoid
trying to cover all 6 lessons at once - #informationoverload!

If you’re
hitting lesson 2 and 3 in one mom’s night – head to Lesson 3 now.
If not, give yourself a pat on the back for getting out of the house and getting
this preschool ball rolling. Savor the ice-cold lemonade and enjoy the rest of
the time with your future best buddies!

<span style="font-family: "hellobasic"; line-height: 150%;">

So now that you've decided, "Yes, I really can start my own preschool co-op," it's time to get started with lesson 1: Find Your Tribe.

If you're
anything like me (major introvert), step one may just be the hardest part of
getting your own preschool co-op up and running. Why? Because you really have
to put yourself out there!

But, you
can't really have a co-op without anyone to cooperate with, right? So, this
step is crucial! And as hard as it may be - it is sooooo worth it! I have a
little story I'll share with you at the end, but for now, let's stay focused.

So, first
step, keep your eyes open for people that just may be prime candidates for your
group. The neighbor that has a toddler running around yard. The mom you see at
church with a baby in one arm, and using the other arm to corral her other kids
to their classes. The family that you always seem to run into at the park. Look
around - you might just be pleasantly surprised by how many other moms are
craving the connection that a preschool co-op would provide.

If you're
already doing an activity with similarly aged kids - dance classes, sports
teams, Sunday school classes - this is your "jackpot zone!" Then, all
you have to do is ask.

Easier said
than done, right?

Don't worry
- you don't have to have it all together (I certainly didn't) - but just be
honest. You can say something like, "Hey, I'd really like (insert your
kiddo's name here) to have some more structured social time - and I just need
to get out of the house every once in a while - so I was thinking of putting
together a little preschool co-op. Nothing super formal, but I was wondering if
you'd be interested. It seems like (insert your kiddo's name) already really
enjoys playing with (insert their kiddo's name)."

There -
done. And really, what's the worst that could happen? She says she's not
interested. Oh well. But if you think about the best that could happen from
those few sentences - ah, the possibilities are endless!

So, start
asking, but my one caution is this - be mindful of just how large your group is
getting. Remember, most likely, you will be hosting this in a home or other
single-room location - so bigger isn't always better.

We have found that a
group of about 8 students (not including parents or siblings) is ideal. If you
have less than 4, the kiddos don't seem to take the "preschool"
aspect of it as seriously. If you get much bigger than 9, well, let's just say
things can get a little crazy.

So, now it's
your turn. Think of 2 or 3 other moms that you'd love to have as a part of your
co-op. Don't worry about starting small, because they may have 2 or 3 other
moms in mind as well. Then, to borrow Nike's famous slogan, "Just Do
It!" Meet them at the park, give them a call, you can even share this blog
post and say, "Hey, I'm interested in doing this - you in?"

So, go for
it ladies, Find Your Tribe! I know it will be so worth it! Then, check back
next Friday, July 1st, for Lesson 2: Define Your Structure.

So..... I
did promise you a story.

Almost
exactly 4 years ago I went to a park playdate with a mom that I kinda knew from
church. We had a few mutual friends, but had never really hung out. To be
honest, I was a little intimidated by her - she seemed to have it all together.
But we both had boys that were the exactly the same age and were both pregnant
with our second boy. So, I sent what felt like a super random text, and we set
up a playdate at the park.

The boys
loved playing together and she and I pieced together a conversation, mostly
revolving around our boys. Was it a perfect playdate? No. But she was really
sweet, and I wanted to get to know her more. We got together a couple more
times, Then, I invited her to the preschool co-op that was getting started. The
rest, as they say, is history.

Fast forward
to today. My boys are absolutely best friends with hers. They adore playing
together and treat each other more like brothers than friends. She is truly one
of my best friends, and now we get up early one day a week to run together. So
we can just have time to chat, without the constant interruption of kiddos.
Honestly, she has blessed my life tremendously, and looking back, I am so
thankful for that initially awkward park date. It has blossomed into a
"better than I could ever ask" for friendship.

That's a little bit of my story. What will yours be? So, go for it! You never know what friendships may grow from a simple question.

See you next week!

You might be thinking: Can I really start my own preschool co-op? Or, my little one is only 2 (or 3 or 4 or 5), do he really need this? Or, I can barely make it out of my house as it is, do I really have the time and energy to coordinate a preschool? The answer to all of these questions is YES, YES, and YES!

After teaching for 8 years, I transitioned to being a stay at home mommy. I was incredibly thankful to be home with my little ones - a newborn and almost 2 - but I was completely overwhelmed. To be honest, I just survived for about a year. While I loved being home to pour into these little lives, I was exhausted. I knew something needed to change. I knew I wanted to start incorporating some "instruction" into our day, especially for my then almost 3 year old. I knew we needed more structure. And I definitely knew we all needed to get out and connect with other families more regularly. How that was going to happen, I didn't know, but I started to ask.

The more moms I talked to, the more I found that so many moms were in the same boat. Being a stay at home mommy is HARD. Even when you have a wonderfully supportive hubby (like I have been blessed with), I truly believe it is one of the hardest but most important jobs in the world! So, we started talking...and meeting....and meeting at parks to talk some more. Slowly but surely our preschool co-op was born, and I could not be more thankful for this amazing opportunity.

Now, 3 years later, we are a part of two preschool co-ops, one for each of my boys, and the friendships that have grown out of these weekly meetings are some of our most treasured - for the kiddos and myself. They have both learned so much - not only academically, but socially, spiritually, and yes even physically. They've learned about listening to authorities (other than mom and dad). They've learned about conflict resolution - when that one special toys just seems to bring out the worst in them. We have all learned so much!

It has truly been a blessing for our family, and I would love to pass it on to you! So, for the next six weeks, I am going to walk you through the steps we went through to get it all up and running. Don't worry, we will only take it one step at a time, so you have plenty of time to process and prepare. And hopefully, by the time fall hits, you will be ready to kick off your own preschool year! I am so excited for you to start this journey! Don't hesitate to ask questions- I am more than happy to help!
Is it just me, or has this year flown by? In case you haven't heard, TpT is having a SITEWIDE SALE on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 3rd and 4th!!! These sales don't happen very often, so when they do I like to have my cart ready to go. There are so many great products out there! For the Teachers Pay Teachers sitewide sale, you have the opportunity to save up 28% on everything in my store as well as other seller's stores. My entire store will be 20% off (yes, bundles too), and if you use the promo code CELEBRATE, you will get an extra 10% off, bringing your total savings to 28% off (and even more with bundles!) This is BIG folks! I suggest filling your cart with things for the end of the year and even some items to prepare for the beginning of next year.

Here are a few of my top wishlisted items in my store (you can click any of the photos to see more about the product listed). First up is my Editable Name Activities. I absolutely love using this product with kindergarten students. It provides a ton of practice in a variety of ways - and since it's editable - each child gets their own page with their own name. The kiddos love it! It includes practice for individual names as well as a few class activities.

When I taught 5th grade, the students were responsible for leading their own conference - a task that seems daunting for a student. So, I created these materials to give the students confidence and keep them organized.
Finally, I have my Watch My Progress Journal. I love being able to show students and parents just how much they have grown over the course of the year, and this product allows me to do just that! There is a lot of flexibility in terms of how often you use it, but so many parents have been impressed as they see the student's progress, using this tool.
My oldest dropped his nap, and let's just say, things have been far less productive around here. We are working on this new schedule, and I am definitely planning on being more consistent. Thankfully, Kacey at Doodle Bugs Teaching has motivated me to get back on the blogging train. So, finally, here is my

Here's a little peek into my past week:

This week was busy! It always amazes me how long a "short" week can feel. However, I was super excited to receive my very first Stitch Fix in the mail this week! Several friends have encouraged me to try it for a while, and I finally took the plunge. And oh my, I love it! I actually loved everything in the box! I didn't keep everything because, well, you know, teacher's budget, but I was thrilled with what my "stylist" selected (ha, I even feel funny saying stylist).

I love that you can keep what you like, and send back what you don't - all without even leaving your home. Awesome! So, if you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend it! You can check it out HERE.

Little Bro's preschool group got to visit the fire station this week! Of course, I forgot my camera :( but all of the kiddos were enamored with the whole thing. They especially loved getting to sit in the fire truck. I think every one of them walked away wanting to be a firefighter when they grow up.

Big Bro and I have been working on CVC word families this week. It is wonderful to watch his progress, and I especially love watching his confidence in reading grow. His excitement for learning is contagious!

Look what I finally ordered! Yes, business cards! Simple, but very exciting for me! These arrived on Tuesday and I was thrilled!

You may wonder why I decided to order business cards at this time, and it's all because of #5........

Tomorrow I get to head to the Pacific Coast Teacher Meet-Up! I am super excited to meet some other TpT-ers, build relationships, and learn a lot! I'll be sure to let you know how it goes!

I have come a long way since starting this journey a little less than a year and a half ago, and I want to continually try to improve my products and resources. I will always remember where I was - getting ready for classes in my college dorm room - when it seemed like our whole world was turned upside down. It was a day that will loom in American history forever. So before we move on, I want to stop and say a prayer of thanks to all of the men and women who have and who continue to selflessly sacrifice their lives for the freedoms we have here. May we never forget 09.11.01
On a more upbeat note, I am honored to link up with Kacey at Doodle Bugs Teaching for the
My kids say some of the funniest things. On Tuesday evening, my wonderful hubby had to stay late at school for a Math Night and my boys were very concerned that Daddy was not eating dinner with us. My oldest said the following:

Ah, I just love my boys. Even after a long day, they can always make me smile!

Last week I had the privilege of teaching Little Bro's preschool group. This week I got to teach Big Bro's group. This group has seven 3, 4, and 5 year olds - and they are all boys. Quite the lively group! This is our third year together and it has been such a blessing! This semester we are going through the Days of Creation. So, I started with teaching about Light. And let me tell you - teaching about light to 4 & 5 year olds is no easy task! We discussed natural and artificial light. Then, we talked about how light travels in a straight line. Next we moved on to items that were transparent, translucent, and opaque. I used items that we had around the house and the boys actually did a great job of classifying them!

We also did a crayon resist painting comparing the light and darkness. First, the kiddos used white, yellow, and orange crayons to draw "bursts" of light. Then, because God separate the light from the darkness on Day 1, we then painted over the crayons with black watercolor. Okay, we definitely had some blue, purple, and reds in there, but that's what happens when you give kids watercolors :) They loved how the "light" colors showed up even with the dark watercolors.

We also created a "light box" to discuss refraction (or how light can be bent). The full activity can be found HERE. They loved seeing the "light show" in the box - especially the colored "lights."

I loved hearing them say "I see blue and green." Then, when I would cover up one of the bottles, "I only see green."

Or, "I only see blue." They were really starting to get it! So much fun!

Finally, we got our order of Usborne books from a friend! My boys were in LOVE with the Wipe Clean books! And I love that they can do as many pages as they want.....and then do it again tomorrow!

My oldest, who is almost 5, had his very first soccer practice this week! As I played soccer for more than 12 years, this was definitely a special day for me. I loved helping him put on his shinguard, pull on those long soccer socks, and tie those cleats. I loved watching him get out there and not give him. When he came home, he even said, "Yes, mom, I never gave up. I wanted to persevere!" I was impressed. Yes, it was a bunch of 5 year old running around with little to no direction, but so special for me. And of course, little bro needed to tag along as well!

I have also been very busy working on my Letter of the Week Bible Supplement! I love integrating Biblical truths and components into my teaching, so this was the big project I started over the summer. It is ending up taking much more time than I previously thought, but I am so enjoying putting this unit together! It's available to purchase in my TpT store, but it is a growing bundle. I wanted to make it available now so teachers and/or parents could use the same material consistently throughout the year, but didn't have it finished before the year started. Anyway, I update it weekly to include the new components. So, if you're not seeing many new items from me, it's probably because I am spending time updating this set! Here's a little peek at some of what is included for the letter D.

So, I feel just incredibly blessed! Though I do not have my own full time classroom currently, I have the opportunity to teach preschool to my boys (and a group of about 7 other kiddos once a week)! This is my third year doing preschool with my older son and my first year with my little guy. Basically, there is a group of about 7 moms who all have kiddos around the same age. We meet once a week for a little over an hour and work on different skills and concepts. It has been so much fun! In fact, two of the other moms are also teachers, so it has been such a blessing getting to collaborate with them! We usually rotate who is the "lead teacher" for the day, and this week I got to teach! I just love it! Though I feel blessed to be home with my boys, I definitely miss having my own classroom, and this is a perfect combination of the two! Here's just a peek at one of our activities :)

I scattered various color cards around the room. Then, I called out a color and each student found a picture for that color.

Then, we glued the colors on the page to match the words. The kiddos had a blast!

I was also finally able to upload my first CVC Word family. I am working on a whole set of CVC word activities, but the -at word family is available now! My oldest is really loving the activities! You can find the whole unit HERE.

I also got to start by Bible study with my high school girls this week! This group of girls is so very special to me! I had several of them in my class in 5th grade (the rest of them were in the other 5th grade class at the school), my husband had all of them in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Now, they are juniors and seniors and it's my 3rd year of Bible study with them. It is such a privilege and joy to share in their lives! We are slowly working our way through the book of Nehemiah.

The day had finally arrived. I had just graduated from college with my teaching credential a few months earlier. My classroom was organized, decorated, and prepared for the year. I anxiously awaited the arrival of my new 34 students! I was only 22 years old, and while my carefully laid out lesson plans, strategies for differentiation, and sheer excitement for teaching gave me confidence, one area that I realized I was not prepared was classroom management - specifically, how do I get 34 completely different students to cooperate, listen, and "buy-in" for the year. Thankfully, I had a wonderful grade-level team and an incredible principal and mentor who helped me establish classroom routines, procedures, rules, and expectations that made that first year a success. I could not have done it without them!
So, for all of you first year teachers, and even those who may have been in the classroom for a long time, here are my top seven tips for successful classroom management:

1. Articulate Your Expectations
If you fail to clearly communicate what you expect from your students, they will inevitably fail to live up to your standards. Now, this requires that you actually decide what your expectations are. Begin by selecting what behaviors you want to teach. What expectations do you have for transitions? Turning in work? Needing to use the restroom? Getting books from the classroom library? Noise level? Sharpening pencils? Asking for help? Dismissal? The list goes on and on. However, choose which procedures you have specific expectations for and go from there. Remember, you can't teach the behavior unless you have determined your expectations for it. So, spend some time mapping it out - it is time well spent!

2. Practice, Practice, Practice

I always spend the first few weeks of school practicing the different procedures in the classroom over and over again - making sure the students know exactly what it looks like and sounds like to carry out the procedure correctly. Yes, we literally spend time walking from the playground to the classroom, passing in blank papers, pretending it is the end of the day - multiple times! Although it can be incredibly tempting to fly through the teaching of classroom procedures and expectations to get to all of the academic stuff, don't do it! If you want to have an effective learning environment, you are going to have to spend time teaching and practicing procedures. If you do it the beginning of the year, you can establish clear expectations with a receptive audience in a positive light. Otherwise, you will inevitably spend time during the year battling for control of your classroom or trying to get your students to "un-learn" what they have been doing for their procedures all year. Trust me, taking time in the beginning is SOOOO worth it!

3. Look for Every Opportunity to Catch Kids Doing the Right Thing
Everyone appreciates praise for doing something well. So, especially in those first few weeks of school, help your students learn and apply the classroom rules, procedures, and expectations, by highlighting the students who are doing these things well. Be specific in your compliments so that others can learn from their example. Rather than say, "Great job, Leah!" you might say, "I really appreciate how Leah quietly came in from recess, took her seat, and now has her eyes on me." Or "Thank you, James, for raising your hand before you speak." The kids usually catch on pretty quickly. When students are receiving specific feedback and attention from you (and even the rest of the class), it gives them less reason to act out in hopes of receiving negative attention.

4. Establish Classroom Rules

This might be a "no-brainer," but having classroom rules in place is an essential component of a successful classroom management plan. Now, the debate goes on as to whether to create rules as a class or to have your own rules established when you begin the first day. I have used both and both have been effective - the choice is yours (or perhaps your schools). However, when establishing rules make sure that they are fairly global in scope - otherwise you will end up with way too many. So, rather than "Don't lean back in your chairs" or "Only walking feet in the classroom," use a rule such as "Be safe." Both of the previous rules are encompassed in that general rule without having to create a list of 25 different rules addressing safety. On that note, however, spend some time discussing what that general rule might look like in the classroom. In my classroom, we always brainstorm at least 10-12 examples of what following that rule looks like and what following that rule does not look like. for the younger kiddos, having picture cards also really helps! Again, just like procedures, spend some time on this one. If your students truly understand the rules, you will have far fewer struggles enforcing them.

5. Be Consistent with Consequences
This perhaps is the hardest one for me - especially in those first few days and weeks of school. I so desperately want the students to know how much I care about them, that it can be incredibly difficult to "reprimand" those cuties for what might seem like small offenses. The reality, however, is that those adorable little kiddos are smart. And if they know they can smile, sniffle, or plea their way out of a consequence, they will! So, be consistent! If your students come in the classroom unacceptably, make them do it again, and again, until it is right. If you use a behavior clip chart, colored cards, or some other method to hold students accountable, start using it right away. I don't usually send home a weekly report for behavior that first week of school, so this is a perfect opportunity to teach your students that you have expectations and that you will be consistent in holding them accountable. Believe it or not, students actually find comfort in knowing boundaries, and being consistent assists in making those boundaries clear.

6. Establish Positive Teacher-Parent Relationships Early

While building relationships with parents may seem out of place in a discussion about classroom management, I have found that building positive relationships with parents makes a huge impact on what happens in the classroom. When parents understand that you want the best for their child and that you want to partner with them in helping their student grow, they are much more receptive to a phone call or meeting in which you have to address a challenge that has arisen. Begin by making a positive phone call in the first 2 weeks of school. Most parents dread the "phone call from the teacher," so make the first call purely positive and be specific. As a parent myself, nothing warms my heart quite like hearing a specific compliment about my child. Communicate with parents early and regularly. Ask them questions. Let them know that you are on their team and you are invested in each student. Building these relationships is a tremendous asset in understanding student behavior in the classroom. Parents are able to share insights from home and you are able to share insights from school. Together, you can partner to make the school year successful for each student, which aids greatly in classroom management.

7. Make Sure Your Students Understand that You Are On Their Team
While I have alluded to this in other tips, building relationships with your students and reminding them that you support them, believe in them, and want the best for them is the essential component that binds all of these strategies together. Look for the best in each of your students, and as your relationships grow, I have found that issues with classroom management dwindle. All of the rules and procedures will not be nearly as effective unless the students first believe the teacher is in their corner.

“No man can be a good teacher unless he has feelings of warm affection toward his pupils and a genuine desire to impart to them what he believes to be of value.”- Bertrand Russell

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my tips. I hope they give you some strategies to implement as you begin this school year. I'd love to hear any of your thoughts on successful classroom management strategies! One Step Closer Teachinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11629026609690768058noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6608535214917510928.post-33127158271467917392015-08-08T10:56:00.002-07:002015-08-08T10:56:11.631-07:00Saturday Spotlight - Editable Name ActivitiesHappy Saturday! For those of you who are already back in the classroom, I hope you are truly able to relax after what I am sure was a busy week! For those of you who are still on vacation, enjoy one of the last few weekends in which you don't have homework to prepare, papers to grade, or lesson plans to attend to. I am so excited to team up with Erin from Kindergarten Dragons for this Spotlight Saturday!

This week I am highlighting my Editable Name Activities.

When heading back to school, one of the most important skills that those PreK and Kinder students need to learn is how to write, spell, and recognize their name. So, I designed this activity packet with exactly that in mind. And since it is editable, each of your students gets a page that is uniquely their own!

Students get practice writing their name with these fun dotted letters!

Students also have multiple opportunities to practice spelling their name and recognize their name. The gumball name page is always a favorite!

I have also included 4 different class activities for students to see how their name compares to other students in their class.

I also just updated the file so that it can be edited in either Microsoft Word or Microsoft Power Point. My kids have loved these activities and I hope yours do too! Have a lovely start to your school year and be sure to head back to the this week's Kindergarten Dragons Link-up for other great ideas and resources!

One of the
activities that has been a staple on the first day of school since the first
time I had my own classroom was a "Get to Know Your Teacher" Power
Point presentation and quiz. Sometime in the morning, I tell the students that
school has started and it is time for their first test.

This is always met
with groans, gasps, and a few heads inevitably hit their tables or desks.
However, once I pass out the papers, they smile, laugh, and breath huge sighs
of relief when the "test" is really just a "quiz" on how
well they think they know their teacher. I have a series of about 12-15
questions, usually multiple choice, for students to answer about me. Once the
students have answered the questions, we fire up the projector and start the
power point. On the power point, I have the same questions that are on the
test. So, I show the question and give some students an opportunity to share
their projected answer. On some questions, I call out the possible answer
choices and have students "vote" for what they predict to be the
answer. For the younger kids, I don't pass out paper "tests," I just
show them the power point question and allow several to make guesses.

Then, this is where the
fun begins. I show them the answer to the question and usually include a
picture related to the answer. So, I will include pictures of my family, my
dog, and even some pictures of me as a kid. I cannot tell you how much they
love this! They get especially excited when the sport you played or the
instrument you learned is something that they do as well! They really get a
kick out of seeing pictures of me as a kid -so I encourage you to include this
if at all possible! We go through the entire "quiz" and, by the end,
the students feel a little more at home in my classroom.

I have found that
this short activity goes a long way in building student relationships. When the
students can make any type of connection with you, it goes a long way. Also,
seeing me as a "real person" not just "the teacher" helps
to lighten any worries, fears, or anxieties they have about the school year.
It's always a fun way to begin the year, and I must say, every year I have
students referencing things from the "quiz" throughout the year -
even May and June!

I have created an
Editable Get to Know Your Teacher Power Point to assist you, if you would like
to use this in your classroom this year.

I didn't include a
paper quiz because I always liked making the "wrong answers"
something to talk about as well. For example, maybe I didn't take dance class
as a kid, but I loved watching my sister dance and even ended up taking a
couple of classes in high school! That way, even though the answer isn't
totally correct, it still gives them a little more insight into my life.

Following this
activity, I give them their first piece of "homework" for the year. I
know, a test AND homework on the first day?!?!? Since they got to learn about
me, it's my opportunity to learn more about them, I give each of them a box
paper bag (the lunch bag size), and if I'm really on top of things, I have it
decorated with their name and other accents (maybe the school mascot, decorative
ribbon, etc). Their homework is to gather 5 things that tell me about
themselves. It can be actual items or pictures of their items. We brainstorm
different ideas of what could be included - a picture of their family,
something that represents a sport they like to play, an item that shows what
they would like to be when they grow up, etc. Some years I specifically assign
items: 1) Someone that you love very much 2) Something you like to do in your
spare time 3) Something you did this summer 4) What you want to be when you
grow up 5) A place that you love to visit. Whether it is assigned or more open
is up to you!

the days that follow, I have 5-7 students share their bags. While they share, I
take notes about each student's interests. I cannot tell you how valuable this
information has been in building relationships and making learning meaningful

relationships, but it encourages relationships among the students as well!

I must say, I have one amazing husband! On Monday, he took both my boys camping - on his own! He packed up everything and took the boys for an entire 27 hours! Yes, that means I had a quiet house and was able to get so much done! I don't know what I possibly did with all my spare time before kids ;) All of the boys had a blast, and I was so thankful to get errands, cleaning, laundry, and yes, plenty of Teachers Pay Teachers stuff, checked off my checklist. They came home covered in dirt, and with sticks, rocks, and even a frog in tow. While I was grateful for the time to be "productive," those grimey faces never looked better!

My oldest son has been working so hard to ride his bike without training wheels, and this last week, it just clicked! He is still working on getting started on his own and making turns without ending up on the ground, but he is so proud - and, I must say, I am too!!

I was able to update my Watch My Progress Journal this week! I use this to track the growth of my students over the year in certain skills. It's also a great place to organize monthly work for a portfolio at the end of the year! I am always amazed at how much these students grow in a year!

Here's a little peek into my past week:

I celebrated my birthday this week and as I reflect on the past year, I know that I am truly blessed. My hubby and boys showered me with love, acts of service, and beautiful cards. Of course, we topped the evening off with some frozen yogurt - my favorite! I know, I know, it looks like a kid's cup of yogurt, but I love it!

Also, as part of the birthday celebration, my entire store is 20% off until Sunday. And if you haven't entered the BIRTHDAY GIVEAWAY yet, be sure to do so! I know I can always use a gift certificate to TpT!

I finally finished the update to my Editable Name Activities. This was my big project last summer, and updating it has become my big project this summer. Ha! I took all that I learned my first year on TpT and applied that to updating this product. It now comes in both Word and Power Point versions as well! So, if you previously purchased this item, be sure to download the new update by going to your "My Purchases" page!

So, we are completely re-doing our backyard this summer. With the horrible drought in California, we decided to let our grass go. So, despite the heat, my husband has worked tirelessly to rip out all of the grass and get things cleaned up - it was a bit of a mess! This week he built two wonderful planter boxes for us to use in the fall and next spring! I am so excited - and so are the boys! There's still a lot to do back there, but I was excited about this! Now, just praying for a very wet winter!

I finally got my Numbers 1-10 packet uploaded! I have been working on it off and on all summer, but with all of the traveling, product revisions, and life, it's been slow. So, I am happy to announce it is finally posted!

Whew! July has really been an amazing and busy month so far! I started the month with the launch of my new blog. Kristen at Design Infusions did an amazing job, and I am so thankful for her! Through that, I've been able to meet some wonderful people! Kelly, from Lattes and Lunchrooms, has been such a gift! She has helped me begin to figure out this whole blogging adventure and has been such an encouragement to me! We've been communicating via email and we both look forward to seeing our friendship grow. I got to spend about a week and a half visiting family and enjoying this summer weather. Now, this week I celebrate my birthday and I truly feel blessed! I am so thankful for the people I have been able to meet and spend time with over these past few weeks. So, I wanted to give back a little and celebrate with a sale and giveaway!

My entire store will be 20% off Thursday through Sunday. You can also enter the Rafflecopter giveaway below to earn a chance to win one of 2 $10 gift certificates to Teachers Pay Teachers or some adorable digital papers from Design Infusions. This has actually been quite an exciting week - believe me, most weeks are not usually this eventful, but here's a little peek into this week!

My family and I got to visit my in-laws at the central coast. My boys absolutely LOVED getting to go to the beach, chase the waves, build sandcastles, and soak up some sun! Here I am chasing my youngest in the waves. We had such a fun time!

Watching the U.S. Women's Soccer Team win the World Cup was definitely a highlight for me. I played soccer for over 13 years, and my dad coached me every year. It was very special getting to watch the game with him, and it definitely brought back a ton of wonderful memories!

Though we've been on vacation and I haven't been super productive with developing resources, I am finally closing in on finishing my first number bundle. My older son has been loving the activities (he's my official tester of many materials), and I am excited to be able to post it soon! Here's a sneak peek of one of the activities.

My oldest son finally learned to swim this week - and we're talking swimming from the shallow end of the pool all the way to the deep end! He has always loved the water, but without a pool in our own backyard, hasn't always had the consistent practice needed. However, this week, while visiting grandparents, he has been in the pool everyday, and it finally clicked! I am so proud of him!

Finally, being surrounded by family this week has been such a blessing. We spent the first half of the week with my in-laws and the second half with my family - and the time has been so sweet! Since we don't live in the same towns, this extended time with family members is nourishment to my soul! Ah, the gift of summers off (since my hubby and I are both teachers). Spending time with my parents, siblings, nieces, nephew, and other extended family has been wonderful! I love watching my kiddos interact with their grandparents and cousins, and I treasure watching these relationships grow. While I might be a little bummed to miss the TpT conference in Vegas, I wouldn't trade this special time with family for anything!

Hey everyone!
This week I decided to link up with Miss Monica from I Heart Grade 3 for her weekly summer link up. This week's topic was: Where were you 5 years ago?

At times I feel like 5 years is such a short amount of time, but then again, SO much can change in 5 years! 5 years ago this summer, my husband and I were going to my family's baby shower for my first baby boy. While that might not seem like such a big deal, it was a HUGE event for me. You see, my husband and I had been trying to get pregnant for the past 3 years and even had 3 different doctors tell us that there was no way we would be able to get pregnant naturally. We were crushed, to say the least. We had been seeing a specialist for a few months and that January had gone in, only to have them send us home saying that they would not even attempt any sort of procedure because there was not a chance that month. Fast forward a few weeks, and my husband and I were sobbing tears of joy after discovering we had indeed become pregnant naturally! Isn't God amazing? We know that our little boy is one of God's miracles and we thank Him for our little guy everyday.

So, summer 5 years ago was truly spent celebrating the gift of this little boy and preparing for his arrival! As you can see, we had a blast decorating his room!
I was preparing to enter my 6th year of teaching, and trying to figure out how I was going to balance teaching while being very pregnant, what maternity leave was going to look like, and how to be an effective, engaging teacher while surviving on just a few hours of sleep. Thankfully, I had an amazing husband (at the same school!!!) to walk with me through it all.

5 years ago, my parents had no grandchildren (2 were on the way, but not here yet). They now have 5 with one more on the way. 5 years ago, I stood in awe of the gift of the baby in my ever growing tummy. Today, I stand in even greater awe of God's goodness and grace as I look at my 2(!!!) healthy, growing boys! 5 years ago, I was teaching full time and loving every minute of it. Today, I am still teaching, but not in a full time classroom anymore. While I still have a passion and a love for teaching, I am so thankful for the opportunity to be home with my boys. Yeah, 5 years might not seem like a long time, but wow, things have really changed in my life! So thankful for all of the blessings in these past five years! One Step Closer Teachinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11629026609690768058noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6608535214917510928.post-21507629065534292752015-07-05T12:05:00.000-07:002015-07-15T20:25:27.502-07:00Our 4th of JulyI have to begin by saying that I have two INCREDIBLE parents! Every year they host a big 4th of July BBQ, complete with homemade ice cream, ping pong, water basketball, swimming, and, of course, fireworks. They open their home to family and friends and we all walk away from the day, exhausted, but feeling incredibly blessed. A few years ago, my mom started "hosting" a food competition at our annual 4th of July BBQ. There is a category assigned, anyone who wants to can participate, everyone votes for their favorites, and she always has little prizes for the winning dishes. It's always in good fun, but there's always a little competition - especially between my siblings. Here's a little peek at what the spread looked like this year:

The category this year was appetizers, so I entered these pretzel bites from Sally's Baking Addiction. And I must say, they were wonderful - especially with the yummy cheese sauce to dip them in - YUM!
It was a wonderful 4th of July, and I am so thankful for the blessings of family, friends, and freedom! I'd love to hear about your 4th of July as well! One Step Closer Teachinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11629026609690768058noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6608535214917510928.post-39010410939675196772015-07-03T14:29:00.004-07:002015-07-09T14:23:30.814-07:00Welcome to my Blog! What?!?!? I have a blog! I have been toying with the idea of entering the blogging world for the past year or so, and about a week and a half ago I decided to finally take the plunge. I am so excited! A HUGE thank you goes out to Kristen at Design Infusions who created my entire design and set everything up for me. She was such a pleasure to work with - professional, knowledgeable, timely, and so patient with me and I tried to figure everything out! And I absolutely LOVE what she did!
So begins my blogging adventure. Thank you so much for simply taking the time to stop by. On this blog I hope to share some of my teaching tips and ideas as well as some of the resources I have designed to help you in your classroom or home. And since I absolutely adore my little family, I'll probably also be sharing some of our adventures, successes, and yes, even major flops - because sometimes those create some of the best memories, right?
So, if you'd like to join me, don't forget to hit that "b" for Bloglovin' to follow along and join me on this adventure. I hope you all have a wonderful 4th of July tomorrow! Thanks for stopping by!
